General Practice...

The Old-Fashioned Country Lawyer

A “General Practice” or “Family Practice” traditionally encompassed a broad range of practice areas such as Civil Law, Criminal Law, Personal Injury Law, Litigation, Bankruptcy, Business Law, Family Law, Real Estate Law, Estate Planning, Probate, Tax Law, among other legal areas. Traditionally this “General Practice” or “Family Practice” typically practiced by a lawyer’s office was commonly referred to as the old-fashioned small town country lawyer so to speak.

Briefly speaking, General Practitioners draw on a far wider range of resources than a specialist. Here we also use that broader range of knowledge to educate you on your legal issues within our core competencies and refer you to a legal specialist when your legal issue falls outside the scope of our practice abilities. We strive to be the traditional "Family Lawyer" (akin to the old-fashioned small town country lawyer) that you contact, develop a relationship with, and work with over a period of years to provide solutions to your general legal issues. Our office maintains a general practice in a limited number of civil law practice areas, including civil law, family law, estate law (wills trusts & probate), real estate law, and business law to provide these services for you, your family, or your business.

In today’s complex environment in our urban community there is a strong trend to specialize in a specific practice area. With the exception of a few highly specialized areas of law, such as practicing before the Patent Bar, any licensed lawyer generally can choose an area of law to concentrate their law practice and take on any type of legal matter within the state that he or she is admitted to practice law. Doctors provide us with a good analogy for the term general practice. A medical school graduate, once licensed to practice in his/her state, is legally permitted to practice any type of medicine in the state which he/she is practicing. This Physician’s practice was traditionally called a “General Practice” or “Family Practice”. Historically, many physicians trained to engage in the General Practice or Family Practice (akin to the old fashioned small town country doctor who made house calls), while some trained to specialize, such as in general surgery, plastic surgery, oncology, etc. While in theory any physician can do anything in regards to the practice of medicine (subject to their practice abilities and some additional training beyond their basic medical school training), nevertheless, in today’s more complicated environment in our urban community there is a strong trend to specialize and many choose to specialize and there are valid reasons for doing so, including increased productivity due to specialization, economies of scale, etc. The above referenced analogy for doctors is also true with lawyers. Many lawyers engage in a "General Practice" or “Family Practice”, and refer matters that fall beyond their legal expertise to a legal specialists, if the client so requires. This is what we also do in our office. We strive to be the old fashioned “country lawyer” or traditional “family lawyer” so to speak. In our office, we specialize in people first and the legal issue second (subject to and in accordance with the California Rules of Professional Responsibility). In each case we do what is in the best interests of that particular client. We will strive to assist you if possible, but if your legal problem falls outside the areas of our general practice we will refer you out to a legal specialist.

To sum it up, sometimes clients seem to want and need the old-fashioned "country lawyer" who has a diverse practice and can serve as "one stop shopping" for the client's legal needs.
